Am I the only one who's found the end of Maskerade to be extremely cruel and depressing?

Nope. Me, I felt kinda cheated at what happened to Agnes, and yet at the same time the ending felt exactly like business as usual in Discworld. I've come to expect that with Pratchett's books: even when it's happy ever after, the good guys can still be screwed over or left out in the cold. Which just depresses me more.

Honestly, it's not even the fact that Agnes was punted aside just like that - it's the way it just came out of left field. There wasn't any actual build-up to them turning their backs to Agnes, everyone was just a huge jerk to her for no good reason - even Walter, even Granny and Nanny. It didn't feel like it was Agnes' decision at all to leave, like she had the least bit of power in her situation. It was like the world punched her in the face and she had to crawl back home under sneers. I don't care if it's realistics, it's the kind of story I hate most.

I would have felt better if she had exploded in everyone's face and stomped out with her head held high. She deserved better.
